Medical Care

Faraja is committed to improving the health, strength, and mobility of all students. The school has a full time physical therapist and a well-equipped physical therapy center right on campus. Each student receives some form of physical or occupational therapy in order to strengthen their body and accommodate for their individual physical limitation. The physical therapy room was recently removed and re-equipped with the support of a grant from Bonner Paddock and the OM Foundation.
The physical therapist, Emil Mhina, also shepherds students to Tanzanian doctors and hospitals as their health and physical needs may require. These include the Kilimanjaro Christian Medical Centre and Machame Lutheran Hospital. Our school also has been blessed with help from a team of volunteers from the University of Maryland Dental School.

Many Faraja students have received orthopedic surgeries which, in many cases, have enabled the student to eventually walk for the first time without the need for a wheelchair or crutches. Other students benefit from prostheses, braces, or other devices. Modern medicine, funded by generous donors, has produced miraculous improvement for our students. Enthusiastic play on the soccer field or playground is a reminder that these children are not truly disabled.
